Expanded Roanoke Facilities Office
Families that provide care for individuals with severe physical or intellectual disabilities are faced with the lack of facilities and services that should be available to them on a regular basis. Goodwill programs provide peace of mind to these families each day by helping their family members achieve greater independence.
Two Goodwill day support programs provide developmental services to disabled adults. These programs do not focus on work training, instead on increasing the individual’s independence. They are the Adult Developmental Learning Services (ADLS) and Specialized Day Support (SDS). These programs are currently operated out of the
Salem
facility as well as the existing
Melrose Avenue
location.
The Goodwill Jobs Campus will consolidate and house both day service programs. This will increase efficiency and coordination of much needed services to this population. The new location gives Goodwill the opportunity to increase the number of persons receiving these developmental services by up to 50%.
The new area will make available the following learning and work simulation activities:
- Physical fitness and therapy supports mobility and increased physical strength
- Science room results in attaining academic skills and understanding the day-to-day world
- Art room results in increased fine-motor skills, hand-eye coordination, and creativity
- Wildlife/Greenhouse increases self-reliance, tactile abilities, and mental health
- Exercise room results in learning to follow directions and improves social interaction
- Work simulation learning environment for structured activities, following directions, eye-hand coordination, and improved vocational skills
- Relaxation area provides unstructured time during day leading to improved mental health
- Field trips improves social interactions in community settings
